How to Look After Your Mental Health

Mindfulness

We get it, trying to balance work, socialising, self-care and personal commitments can leave you feeling like you’re spinning one too many plates. It’s natural to want to give it your all in every area of your life but often we spread ourselves too thin and this can have an impact on our mental health. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so here are our top tips on looking after your mental health throughout the winter months. Just think of us as your very own accountability coach!

Relax and Reset

One of the best ways to prioritise your mental health is to carve out time in your busy schedule for rest and relaxation. There are many ways to fit this into your day. It could be a bath with your favourite oils and salts, watching a TV show or podcast you love or even a meditation session before bed.

Move Your Body

Sometimes we all need a little feel-good factor and daily exercise can help to blow those cobwebs away and get endorphins flowing around your body. If you suffer from low moods or you are lacking motivation or inspiration, moving your body is the antidote. It doesn’t have to be a strenuous gym class, it can be a soothing yoga session, a long walk or even dancing around to your favourite playlist.

Set Boundaries

This is an important one. Trying to please everyone or taking on too much can leave you feeling burned out and overwhelmed but learning to set boundaries and saying no to things that don’t fit with your schedule can help you regain some of that mental energy. Setting boundaries is the first step to caring for your mental health and being consistent with them will have a positive effect.

Find a Support Network

Some of the most enjoyable moments can be found while spending time with friends and family and these people are your first port of call when you need support mentally. Our biggest and best tip for focusing on your mental health is to find your tribe. These are the people that will lend an ear when you are feeling troubled or struggling with negative emotions. Reach out to these people when and as you need to and notice how feeling loved and supported can have a positive impact on your mental health.

Eat Well

What you put into your body is paramount when keeping your mental health in tip top shape. If you feel your mental health is taking a nose dive, it’s time to overhaul your diet and flood your body with nutrients. Swap sugary sweet foods for leafy greens and high protein meals that give your body and mind what they need to help you cope with the everyday stresses of life. Be consistent with choosing healthy options and you not only look great but feel great too.
